"Ultimate" transfer wish revealed by Newcastle talent as manager suggests summer move
At such an important time in the club’s recent history, the competition for both starting XI and senior squad places has become fiercely contested - and will only get tougher if and when an influx of new signings arrives this summer.
Eddie Howe is clearly open to handing first-team opportunities to Under-21 talents, shown by the emergence of Elliot Anderson before his sale, along with Lewis Miley and now Sean Neave.
However, it's not an easy task given the level required to break into the senior side, with one of our young talents now encouraged to leave for regular minutes elsewhere by the manager of his national team!
"He needs consistent football”
Australian National Team manager Tony Popovic has encouraged Garang Kuol to leave Newcastle and seek first team football elsewhere.
Since arriving from A-League side Central Coast Mariners in January 2023, the Aussie talent has had two tough loan spells at Hearts and Volendam, followed by a season in our Under-21 side after a summer injury blocked a loan move.
Speaking to the media this week, Popovic commented on Kuol’s recent appearances in the Premier League 2, and hinted that the youngster needs an opportunity to shine for a senior side instead.
“We're monitoring him. We’ve seen some of his games that have been visible recently in the Under 21s. He just needs consistent football," he said.
“The level can sometimes be deceiving, of course. But for any striker, when they’re scoring, they’re confident. When you see him in and around the box, you can see there's a clear focus and confidence about him when he's dribbling a player, which maybe we haven't seen for a while.
"That also comes with match fitness, that he's playing more regularly, the body and the mind can handle 90 minutes of football.
"It's an area of the park we're always looking at. We're always looking for someone to come through in that area that's scoring goals regularly, that's playing at a high level regularly.
“Hopefully this will help him get a move somewhere where he will then have the challenge of getting into a team where there’s points on the line and there’s constant pressure.”
Since returning to Tyneside after failed loan spells in the Netherlands and Scotland, Kuol has been exceptional for the U-21s, bagging five goals and four assists in 12 appearances.
Kuol reveals "ultimate" transfer wish
Kuol, who was shortlisted for the Premier League 2 Player of the Month award for April this week, has already opened the door to a summer move for senior minutes.
Speaking to ESPN, he said: "The most important thing for me is to be able to play [senior] football... it won't be that easy to jump from the under-21s at Newcastle to a first-team squad which could be in the Champions League.
"For the summer, I'm not really sure what's going to happen in terms of my next move ... but I'd say [senior] football is the ultimate goal."
Does Popovic have a point?
Since bursting onto the scene at the 2022 World Cup, where he almost scored against Argentina, Kuol’s national team career with the Socceroos has left a lot to be desired.
And for a player once touted for big things, he'll soon need a platform to deliver on a consistent basis; not regular minutes in the Premier League 2 at the age of 20.
We’ve established a high threshold for our academy players if they want to break into our first team: the likes of Elliot Anderson and Lewis Miley have shone within the system and been rewarded, so what’s stopping a player as talented as Kuol from doing the same?
Another loan move could be on the cards, but I suspect the next one could be make or break for Kuol when it comes to his Newcastle prospects as he approaches 21.
