NEW: Newcastle revise new stadium plans with capacity pushed beyond 65,000

Following Newcastle United’s historic Carabao Cup win and victory parade, which saw over 300,000 fans take to the streets, the club have decided to push their new stadium plans to the limit.

Subject to government approval, Newcastle United look set to build a stadium on Leazes Park, adjacent to where St James’ Park is located, and NUFC Blog can exclusively reveal that an outline plan is now in place, featuring a revised capacity of at least 70,000.

Although previous reports have mooted a 65,000 capacity, plans for the new development have been extended, with the club revising initial capacity plans given the demand for tickets.

This was not only highlighted by the numbers who applied for cup final tickets, but the volume of supporters who lined the streets and Town Moor for our trophy celebrations at the end of March.

It's believed the club have been taken aback by the response and do not want to sell themselves and supporters short if and when the seemingly imminent move from St James' Park takes place.

Newcastle have already pushed back an official announcement from March where the club met with the Fan Advisory Board. It is yet to be confirmed when the club will communicate the decision to move.

An official update on stadium plans is expected to arrive in the coming months, although soft deadlines for those announcements have been missed previously, with the battle to gain planning permission on city centre land subject to a conservation order.

As previously reported by NUFC Blog, Newcastle have explored the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas as a potential model to follow for any new design.
