Jonathan David available for cut-price fee - Newcastle named as potential destination

Newcastle United missed out on signing Canadian striker Jonathan David on a free transfer last summer.

The Magpies had been strongly linked with a move for Jonathan David after it became clear he'd leave Lille when his contract expired.

However, the closer it came to the date his contract ran out, the clearer it became that the Canadian fancied a move to Serie A, and he subsequently joined Juventus.

His first season in Italy hasn't worked out, though, and it looks like The Old Lady are ready to part ways with the forward after just one season.

Juventus wants a permanent solution

It was recently reported that Newcastle could look to secure a loan deal for the 26-year-old, but a new report from Gazzetta dello Sport has suggested that Juventus would rather sever all ties and could accept as little as €25m (£21.6m).

The report names Newcastle and Crystal Palace as potential destinations for David, also claiming that Paris Saint-Germain could offer Randal Kolo Muani to Juve in a part-exchange.

Wages could be a big stumbling block in any movem however. David's wages at Juventus are thought to be over £185,000-a-week, according to Capology, which would be no surprise given he joined the Italian giants from Lille on a free transfer.

£21.6m is both a bargain and a risk

Newcastle aren't thought to be prioritising a move for a striker this summer, if they are even looking at all, so as much as a £21 million swoop for Jonathan David would be a bargain, we just don't see it happening.

His wages would put Newcastle off anyway, even if they were looking to add to the forward line. On top of that, his less-than-convincing season makes the move a risk at any price, which is why a loan felt more realistic.

We'll see how he performs at the World Cup and revisit whether or not we should have snapped him up at this low price and taken the hit on the wages.
