Kieran Trippier could rip up contract after Wolves betrayal - Keith Downie

Newcastle United lost a big character this summer when Kieran Trippier left the club following the expiration of his contract.

Wolverhampton Wanderers made a shrewd move in scooping up the former England international to help them return to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

It was a surprise move for Trippier, who we were convinced would move abroad, but it looked like a good decision.

When signing for Wolves, Trippier spoke about Rob Edwards being manager being a big factor in his decision to join the Midlands side.

On Thursday, out of nowhere, Rob Edwards was sacked after Wolves had César Peixoto lined up as a replacement. Edwards actually found out about his fate via social media, such was the underhanded nature of the move.

This decision has reportedly given Kieran Trippier serious pause for thought, according to Keith Downie via X

Trippier, who has gone through all the formalities of making an appearance in the club's colours and doing all of the media duties, doesn't actually become a Wolves player until July 1st.

As such, he is now contemplating walking away from the deal, with other clubs interested should he become available again.

"Kieran Trippier is considering ripping up his contract with Wolves following the shock sacking of Rob Edwards today.

"The 35-year-old is angry and feels betrayed at the decision this morning. Edwards being in charge was key to him joining The Championship club last week.

"Trippier was shocked to learn the news this morning (not from anyone at the club) just two days after he passed a medical & was paraded as Wolves’ marquee first summer signing.

"Trippier has essentially signed a pre-contract, so he joins Wolves next month, when his contract at Newcastle ends.

"The defender chose Wolves over a host of other interested clubs, and those clubs are still there. He’s now considering his options…"

We back Trippier to walk away from Wolves

We feel for Trippier here. When a manager is a big part of the reason you join a club only for them to be let go soon after, that's bad enough, but in this case, it's the way in which they went about it.

Rob Edwards was completely in the dark about their decision until it went public, and that doesn't paint a good picture of the club.

We hope Trippier does bin his contract and finds himself another club on principle.
