Newcastle could take £40m hit on Yoane Wissa - Report
Newcastle United will listen to offers for Yoane Wissa in the summer, just one year after his £55m move to Tyneside.
Yoane Wissa campaigned hard to get his move to Newcastle in the summer, going on strike at Brentford to ensure he got his move.
For Wissa, it was about seizing what he viewed as his last chance to get a big move to a side playing Champions League football. For Brentford, they had already lost Bryan Mbeumo and didn't want to lose another goalscorer. Newcastle wanted a striker but didn't want to pay what Brentford were asking.
It was Newcastle who came off worst in the stand-off. Several other strikers failed, the Magpies were desperate and ultimately caved in to Brentford's outrageous demands, spending £55 million to bring in the DR Congo striker who would turn 29 just days later.
Newcastle could listen to £15-20m offers
An injury picked up on international duty just days after signing his contract set the tone for Wissa's season. The 29-year-old didn't play for over four months, and due to Newcastle's hectic schedule, he never had the chance to train with his teammates before making his debut.
Things have not gone well for the striker, and he currently can't force his way into Eddie Howe's team. With Newcastle looking to change things up in the summer, the iPaper has reported that Newcastle will be willing to listen to offers for the striker.
In that piece, Mark Douglas suggests that Newcastle could take a £40 million hit on the forward, stating that his current value is thought to be around the £15-20 million mark.
A loan move has also been mooted, providing he isn't given the opportunity to make the 2026/27 campaign his redemption season at St James' Park.
Give Wissa a chance
That's pretty tragic if it ends up being the case. Newcastle are set to operate a one-in-one-out policy in the summer, so needs must, but that's a big hit to the bottom line.
As the rules are changing from Profit and Sustainability Rules to Squad Cost Ratio, it may not be as big of an issue when everything is factored in, but when our whole ethos is about closing that revenue gap to the gated community of the 'Big Six', can we really afford to be making such costly mistakes?
Surely it makes more sense to persevere with Wissa, who recently discussed his determination to fight for his place and benefit from full training time. Give him a full pre-season and see what he can do, and work out how best to deploy him next season.
We can still bring in another forward, which was the plan anyway. He and Nick Woltemade deserve to be given a chance. They arrived too late in the window to train with their team, and both were thrown in at the deep end.
