Newcastle enter race to sign Kacper Potulski from 1. FSV Mainz 05

Newcastle United are again shopping in Germany this summer as they set their sights on 18-year-old centre-back Kacper Potulski.

Bayer Leverkusen will be the Magpies' main competition for the Polish international defender, according to a report from Sky Sport Germany.

Potulski joined FSV Mainz' youth setup in 2023 and graduated into the first team during this last season, where he went on to make 15 appearances in the Bundesliga, including nine games in the starting lineup.

His performances for FSV Mainz attracted the attention of several clubs and also led to him making his senior debut for Poland last month.

Kacper Potulski has recently changed agents

According to Sky Sport Germany, Potulski has recently changed his representation, which is often a sign that a player is looking for a move.

Bayer Leverkusen have reportedly held talks already, although there's no indication at what stage those talks are; it does suggest that if Newcastle are serious, they should make their move soon.

Potulski is under contract with FSV Mainz until 2028 and doesn't have a release clause in his contract, so the German side can effectively name their price.

Bayer Leverkusen has the edge

It sounds like it's early days. The story was just part of Sky Germany's transfer ticker, so now fleshed out with a tonne of detail, but it could be one to watch.

He certainly fits the bill, being young and already realising his potential, so if there's a deal to be done, we expect Newcastle will be there trying to make it happen.

Our big worry is that, once again, our lack of European football next season could be a hindrance when we make our approach. Bayer Leverkusen will play in the Europa League, which could give them the edge in negotiations, as could the fact that the youngster wouldn't have to leave Germany.

Rumour Rating: 6/10 - Looks like a good fit on paper, but it's early days, and Bayer Leverkusen may prove to be too much competition
