Sandro Tonali pushing for Premier League stay over Serie A - Fabrizio Romano
Speculation about the future of Sandro Tonali continues to rumble in the background while Anthony Gordon's future takes centre stage around Newcastle United for now.
However, just because the focus has shifted, it doesn't mean that journalists have completely forgotten about the Italian whose future still remains up in the air.
It still has to be noted that Sandro Tonali has, at least to the best of our knowledge, not made any noises that he wants to move away from Newcastle United.
His agent, on the other hand, has been quite vocal about him potentially finding a new club, but that's his job, to see if he can find more money for himself his client.
Talk of a return to Italy has been around since the day Tonali arrived at Newcastle, but that talk has always come with the caveat that no Italian club could afford the move, however it never seems to stop the next story from coming out.
Fabrizio Romano says Sandro Tonali wants to stay in England
There has been plenty of interest from Premier League clubs reported in recent months, and now Fabrizio Romano has said on his YouTube channel and via X that if Tonali is to move in the summer, his preference will be to stay in the Premier League.
"Sandro Tonali, not planning to return to Italy this summer despite reports as he’s ready to stay in Premier League. Tonali is on top PL clubs shortlist and he’s keen on staying in England at the highest level."
On his YouTube video, Fabrizio Romano labels a move to Italy as 'impossible' and goes on to mention Manchester United and Manchester City as interested clubs in the Premier League.
Could the move to SCR keep Tonali at Newcastle?
As Romano says in his video, Newcastle will demand a whopping fee, up to £100 million, to part with their midfield maestro this summer, which rules out a move to Italy as no club in Serie A has that kind of money. The big question is whether anyone in the Premier League will be willing to part with such a fee, especially given the rule change coming into effect ahead of the new season.
With Squad Cost Ratio rules coming in, are clubs going to be a bit cautious this summer to see how things pan out, or are they going to take it as read that SCR opens the doors a bit wider for more spending?
All signs point towards Newcastle being a bit cautious, as reports indicate that the Magpies are looking at a one-in-one-out policy this summer, so we can hope that other clubs will follow suit and give us another season with the Italian, at least.
Our feeling, however, is that without European football to offer next season, Tonali may actually start pushing for an exit.
