Tino Livramento injury statement - Newcastle release surgery update after England withdrawal

Tino Livramento was forced to withdraw from the England World Cup squad before he'd even had the chance to see if he was going to be selected to start.

The Newcastle United fullback wasn't 100% fit when he flew out to link up with the squad, but it was hoped that he'd be able to shake off his niggle before the tournament got underway.

Unfortunately, during training, the 23-year-old picked up a calf injury that was deemed too serious for him to continue in the tournament, and he was sent home with Chelsea's Trevoh Chalobah called up to replace him.

It had been a tough season for Tino with injuries, and his form had started to suffer as a result, but Thomas Tuchel had seen enough to know he wanted him in the USA, but it was a gamble that backfired.

Newcastle United announce Tino Livramento has had surgery

Newcastle United has today released a statement confirming that Livramento has actually undergone minor surgery on his injury.

"Newcastle United can confirm that Tino Livramento has successfully undergone a minor surgical procedure.

"The defender, who returned from World Cup duty with an injury, is expected to return during pre-season.

"Everyone at the club wishes Tino a smooth and speedy recovery."

This could ensure Tino stays at the Toon

There had been a lot of speculation that Livramento would move on this summer, with Arsenal and Manchester City both keen at different times.

That interest cooled off before the World Cup got underway, but it's our feeling that his latest injury setbacks have probably ended all interest.

Livramento's injury record has always been an issue. His talent isn't in question, but his ability to stay fit certainly is, so it would make sense to us if those interested parties give him another season at Newcastle and see how much he plays before reigniting their interest.

Hopefully, this is just a minor setback and, as expected, he's back for pre-season, and he goes on to have a great campaign, injury-free. Of course, then, it becomes a matter of keeping hold of him after that, but cross that bridge...
