'Very upset': Bruno Guimarães reacts to World Cup penalty miss

Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes is heading back to England after Brazil were knocked out of the World Cup on Sunday.

Erling Haaland and Norway continued their run of being the only nation that Brazil have faced at a World Cup and never beaten.

Things could have been very different had Bruno Guimarães successfully slotted home a first-half penalty for Brazil, but after a stuttered run-up led to a tame, placed effort which the Norway goalkeeper was able to keep out with ease, the Selecao gradually lost their grip on the game.

Erling Haaland scored twice for Norway, the first goal coming moments after Bruno Guimarães was hooked by Carlo Ancelotti.

Bruno Guimaraes was upset after his penalty miss against Norway

It wasn't Bruno's best game at the competition by any means, although we do feel that Globo Esporte's rating of 4/10 was harsh.

Speaking to reporters after the game (via The Chronicle), Bruno Guimarães apologised for his penalty miss.

"I think I had been enjoying a very good World Cup. So I was happy on the penalty.

"I had studied their goalkeeper a lot and saw that there was the best corner to hit. Unfortunately, he took it. But it's a general sadness, everyone is very upset.

"Anyway, apologise to the fans who always believed, who supported us until the end. It's a very difficult day, even to find the words. Very upset with all this, I'm looking for strength now in our family, which will be an important moment. We are very sad, clearly. It's a game that we had full conditions to win.

"I think it's a very strong pain and it's hard to find words, because we weren't expecting that. We know that soccer often gives you a lot of joy."

Bruno needs to give Newcastle fans assurances on his future

Bruno will now return to Newcastle, where he's likely to face a barrage of questions over his future with the club given all the talk about a potential move to Arsenal.

Newcastle are reportedly adamant that Bruno Guimaraes is not for sale, but if he is starting to fancy a move away, there may not be much Newcastle can do to stop him moving on.

It would make more sense to allow him to leave than to keep him at the club against his will.

We obviously really hope this doesn'thappen, and we don't think that's how Bruno would go about things even if he did fancy a move, but we'll have to wait and see.
