WATCH: Newcastle target Lamine Camara suffers World Cup heartbreak
Newcastle United have been heavily linked with Senegal midfielder Lamine Camara this summer.
The 22-year-old Monaco star was thought to be one of Newcastle's main midfield targets going into the summer window, so he was definitely one to watch at the World Cup.
With Sandro Tonali heading to London for his Tottenham Hotspur medical, Newcastle must now kick up its search for a replacement.
Although Camara is an entirely different profile to Tonali, he is still very high on the Magpies' list to at least help fill the void left by Tonali's exit.
Newcastle took full advantage of Ivory Coast's World Cup exit by accelerating their move for winger Bazoumana Toure, who is expected in the UK for a medical soon.
Lamine Camara was the catalyst for Senegal's World Cup exit
Ross Wilson could now look to do the same after Senegal were dumped out of the World Cup in cruel fashion last night with Lamine Camara right at the centre of the drama.
Having led 2-0 for most of the game, Senegal were pegged back to 2-2 by Belgium with goals in the 86th and 89th minutes, sending the game to extra time. It was in the 115th minute of extra time that Lamine Camara conceded a penalty that took a long, long time to award.
Youri Tielemans stepped up to slot home the spot kick with not enough time for Senegal to respond. Camara was unlucky that the penalty was awarded against him rather than having done anything malicious.
Lamine Camara could be one of three new incomings
Other than that blip, which again was unfortunate rather than poor play, Camara had looked good for Senegal throughout the competition.
He has been identified as one of three targets Newcastle will be actively chasing now that they have a bumper payday coming with the sale of Tonali.
Toure already looks to be Toon-bound, but after Victor Munoz, we're going to wait until we see him in the shirt before we get too carried away. Camara is a target, and Johan Manzambi is also a move that's being worked on.
It could be a busy month for Newcastle. The momentum is shifting, and the mood is lifting. Howay the lads!
